HanziPeek

Privacy Policy

HanziPeek is built so that your learning stays yours. There is no account, no sign-up and no server of ours that stores what you learn. This policy explains exactly what the app does with information.

Last updated November 7, 2026

Who we are

HanziPeek is made by Gao Yuan, an independent developer ("we"). You can reach us at graceglabs@gmail.com.

What stays on your device

Your study data — the words you learn, review history, streaks, word lists, words you add yourself, reading progress and settings — is stored on your iPhone or iPad.

If iCloud Sync is on (Settings → Sync), Apple keeps a copy in your own private iCloud database so your devices stay in sync. That data is protected by your Apple Account; we cannot see or access it. You can turn iCloud Sync off at any time.

What we collect

Anonymous usage statistics. To understand whether features work (for example, how many people finish onboarding or add a widget), the app may send a small number of anonymous events through TelemetryDeck, a privacy-focused analytics service. Each event contains only the event name, a few non-identifying values such as which screen opened the paywall, and a one-way hashed random ID that is created on your device and is not linked to your name, email, Apple Account or any other app.

We never send the words you study, your custom words or lists, your feedback text, your location, contacts, photos or any advertising identifier.

We do not track you across apps or websites, we do not show ads, and we do not sell or share personal information.

Why we process it (legal basis)

Study data on your device and in your iCloud is processed only to provide the features you use; we never receive it.

Anonymous usage statistics are processed on the basis of our legitimate interest in keeping the app working and improving it (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR and UK GDPR). The events cannot identify you. You can stop them at any time in Settings → Privacy → Share Anonymous Usage Data.

Purchases

Subscriptions and the lifetime purchase are handled entirely by Apple. We receive no payment details. The app checks your purchase status with Apple on your device.

Where data is processed

HanziPeek is available worldwide. TelemetryDeck processes the anonymous events on servers in the European Union. iCloud data is stored by Apple under Apple's own privacy policy. Emails you send us are stored by our email provider (Google). When data moves between countries, these providers use the safeguards required by law, such as the EU Standard Contractual Clauses.

Notifications and widgets

Reminders and word notifications are scheduled locally on your device and are only sent if you allow notifications. Widgets read words from the app's shared storage on your device.

Email

If you email us (for example with Send Feedback or Report a problem), we receive what you write, your email address and the technical details the app adds to the message (app version, iOS version, the word or sentence ID). We use this only to reply and to fix problems, and delete it when it is no longer needed.

Children

HanziPeek is not directed at children under 13 (or the minimum age in your country) and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. The app collects no personal information from anyone.

Your rights

Because we hold no personal data about you, there is nothing for us to export or delete on a server. You can delete all study data from your device in Settings → Reset Progress, by deleting the app, and in iCloud Settings for synced data.

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete or object to the processing of personal data — for example under the GDPR (EU/EEA), UK GDPR, the California CCPA/CPRA, Canada's PIPEDA, Australia's Privacy Act, Brazil's LGPD or Japan's APPI. Contact us at graceglabs@gmail.com and we will respond within 30 days. If you are in the EU, EEA or UK you can also complain to your local data protection authority.

We do not sell or share personal information as those terms are defined under California law.

Changes

If this policy changes, we will update this page and the date above. Significant changes will also be noted in the app's release notes.
